Brick Kiln Families

In Pakistan, over 15,000 brick kilns play a significant part in the economy, producing about 45 million bricks per year. But many of the 3 million workers have been trapped there by debt bondage, a form of forced labor.

On our last trip to Pakistan, we met people that had been born in these brick kilns that have been there 40 years, members of second and even third-generation families. [Their] servitude was initiated by a debt of maybe as little as $100 of a medical bill that they couldn’t pay. The Brick Factory owners pay that debt; then they own these people.

These families and children always have had a special place in S.M. I’s heart. We have been able to make difference in many people’s lives by our programs like Sewing Centers, Cosmetology Schools and most importantly by providing Primary education. These people are full of potential to go out to different working places and grow. Let’s lend them a hand to get a better and prosperous lives.

Bringing Hope, Changing Lives

Pastor Silas has been serving the Gospel for the last 13 years in the local brick factories, while working in the brick kiln. He had been living under the slavery of debt for the last 20 years. His grandfather took out a loan before Pastor Silas was born, and the family had been working as indentured laborers since then. The grandfather and father had died and gone to be with the Lord, but the debt had been passed on to Pastor Silas and his children. Pastor Silas wanted to be in full time ministry to brick kiln workers to save them from slavery.  Pastor Silas was liberated from the slavery of bonded labor and S.M.I. helped him keep preaching the word of God to the people at the brick kilns. with the generosity of prayer partners we were able to pay his debt and purchase a cow so he would have an income for his family.

Pastor Silas and his family are happy and praising God for the provision. They will be making enough money by selling milk and a calf for beef. Their life has been transformed and they are rejoicing in the Lord.
